![]() ![]() Wierdnesses in Coppermine included not being able to nest albums. Gallery2 definitely seems better thought out, but I just wonder if all that thinking led them to implement a lot of features that I may not need. When I pull up a page that displays an image in Coppermine I count to 2. When I pull up a page that displays a photo on my Linux box in Gallery2, I count to 6. I literally think it would be faster to learn HTML and CSS and build a site from scratch.I'm looking into photo album software, and frankly am quite surprised Gallery2 is so much more popular than Coppermine. They're great if you want a website that looks like every other website, is clunky and slow, and has 893502890532 features nobody really wants, but I found I spent more time tracking down the CSS for crap I wanted to remove in the absurd 10,000 line CSS files than I did actually getting anything set up. I tried building sites with both PrestaShop and WordPress but gave up very quickly. I have been using a shopping cart application developed in Russia for the past 8 years and their customer service and support has been outstanding. With open source application environments there are far more independent third party developers producing tools and customized code. Also because I do have experience w/ open source customization for WP, B2evo and Joomla sites even though I am a novice. You wouldn't really benefit much from an open source system unless you are an advanced coder, and even then, quasi-closed source software like JAlbum has more customization options than most people will ever need.īecause I have time on my side since I'm not a pro and would just be putting a site together for myself more than anything else. Not sure why you need something that is open source if you are a novice coder. ![]() I have also used it like a cloud for years storing programs and info and anything else I may need out on the road.ĭomains and hosting are cheap as chips now and most hosts allow multiple domains from the one account as well which makes it even better value for targeting specific markets with directed domain names. I can create private areas at will that can only be accessed by direct link so I can put pics up, give people the link and it does not appear anywhere on my public site. There may be something better out there for you now but self hosting is easy and far more flexible than an of the sites i have seen people rave on about. I really flogged that software and it was rock solid and very forgiving. I used it on an intranet for my View stations for my onsite sports work and I have incorporated it into web sites for the galleries. I don't have any experience with anything other than jalbum so can't comment on anything else. I am still testing out WP, Zenphoto and Piwigo. I'll take a look at Jalbum but prefer open-source. That's why I was asking about self-hosted (hosted by me) options though now that I re-read my title, it could be confused for either. There is also loads more you can do with your own space than you can with someone else's. To me they are a lot more complicated than doing your own and people never seem to get what they really want with functionality or appearance. I have never used one of those hosting sites and I fail to understand why people bother with them. I'd suggest you are far better off getting your own domain, webspace and some software like Jalbum and do as you want and can fine tune to what suits YOU. Its a flexible system that allows a lot of customization, plus it gives you a web site and shopping cart system in one package. Sytist is a database that you purchase, so there is no percentage fee taken from your sales, other than the normal Paypal fees. I've been using Sytist for a couple of years now, and PhotoCart from the same developer before that. Currently playing with both Zenphoto and Piwigo, Piwigo looks to be a bit better at this point. I am also familiar w/ the Wordpress platform but didn't really consider it viable. ![]() I like the theme a lot and it seems to have all of the elements I may be looking for. I am a novice with coding but a fast learner. I am leaning more towards a CMS based option like Zenphoto but also have experience with Joomla for other projects. I'm pretty new here so I'm not sure if I am posting in the right forum.ĭo any of you have any recent reviews/experiences or pros/cons on self hosted photo gallery based sites like Zenphoto or Piwigo? Any others I can consider? I'm looking for simple but yet expandable/flexible open source softwares I can use to show photographs. Self hosted photo gallery based websites.
